The focus of the Learning Services Department is to provide appropriate learning environments and experiences for exceptional students and for students who have special needs based on the beliefs held by the London District Catholic School Board.
SMHS offers an excellent School to Community Pathways Program!
Student Program Support Teachers (SPST) provide direct and indirect support and services to students who are identified as "exceptional" through the IPRC (Identification Placement Review Committee) process.
We have two Student Program Support Teachers working in the Resource Room, and another SPST leading the School to Community Pathways classroom.
Ms. Lorraine Thompson is the Department Head of Learning Services and Student Program Support Teacher here at St. Mary’s since 2016. She supports students with last names beginning with the letters A-K. Her first 10 years of teaching were in York Region Catholic Schools until she moved closer to home. She has a background in teaching Religion and Philosophy, (at St. Mary's 2007-2011) and also a Specialist qualification in Special Education. Students feel very supported by her kind and encouraging nature. She supports both the Resource Room and the School to Community Pathways Program.
Mrs. Angela Langlois is Student Program Support teacher in the Learning Services Department, working in the Resource Room. She supports students with last names beginning with the letters L-Z. She has a background in teaching English, History, and French as a Second Language. She holds a Specialist qualification in Special Education and has worked as a Special Education teacher throughout her entire career, in both elementary and secondary schools. She also taught at the Amethyst Provincial Demonstration School, teaching high school students with severe learning disabilities, gaining experience in teaching struggling readers, and the use of assistive technology. Students and staff both benefit from her experience with assistive technology.
