HOCKEY ACADEMY

Open to students in grades 9-10, the Hockey Skills Academy will help student athletes improve and enrich their individual hockey skills, while developing their personal fitness. This course will emphasize building character through achieving both athletic and scholastic success. On ice sessions led by highly trained staff, strength and conditioning designed to maximize physical attributes, and a focus on leadership, citizenship and career exploration will position the student athlete to achieve their individual goals.  

Senior Program (Specialist High Skills Major - Sports)

Open to any student with accepted into the SHSM Sports program. The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is part of Ontario's Student Success Strategy initiative, which focuses on expanding quality learning opportunities. The program enables students to build a foundation of sector focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace. Students will develop their leadership, athletics, fitness and interpersonal skills while earning a coop credit(s) and valuable certifications in the sports and fitness employment sector.

Paired Programming for Success

Junior Program

- open to Grade 9 & 10 students
- PAL1O & 2O - Large Group Activities  (Hockey)

Senior Program

- SHSM program – Sports Program

110 Co- op hours (2 credits) and peer mentoring opportunities

40- 50 hours on ice time dedicated to skill development that is transferable to many other activities and learning situations. (no team tactics, systems or games…no shinny here!) ​
60-70 hours will focus on Health and Nutrition, Decision Making and Sexuality, fitness and various other activities which may include broomball, personal fitness, low organizational games, group activities etc. ​
  • NCCP Coaching certifications
  • Hockey Canada Trainer certifications
  • 110 hours Co-op hours (2 credits)
  • SHSM Red Seal on Graduation Diploma

 

2019-2020 Fee Structure for Hockey Skills Program

The fee for the program is $450.00.  A $150.00 deposit is required at the time of registration, remaining $300.00 is due before the first ice session. The deposit is non-refundable without a medical note. Please use school cash online.

Included in that fee will be:

- 40-50 on ice sessions with a Teacher and/or a Skills Instructor

- Your own Hockey Skills Academy Jersey

 

Notes:

Students will be entered into the program on a first come first serve basis.  The number of sections running will be determined by total enrollment in the course.

Students are NOT required to take the Junior Program in order to be registered in the Senior Program. Although Senior students must meet the requirements for SHSM program.

Students are required to arrange to have their equipment transported to the school each day before prior to period 1 when we are having on ice sessions. Students can air / store their equipment thoughout the day in the team changeroom at school. (Locked)

Registrations will not be accepted until 8am on January 23rd, 2018. (The day after St. Mary's open House)

Step 1

  • Register at St. Mary's Catholic High School
  • Select PAL1O (gr 9) or PAL 2O (gr 10) as one of your choices

Step 2

  • Print off PDF registration form and complete
  • SMHS Hockey Academy (below)

Step 3

  • Return the completed registration form along with the $150 dollar deposit to St. Mary's Catholic High School. Please use School Cash Online for payments.
